Carrie Bradshaw – Shoeaholic or Fine Footwear Aficionado?

“Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world.” ~ Marilyn Monroe

In Sex in the City, when Carrie Bradshaw accepts Mr. Big’s marriage proposal he asks her: “Should we get you a diamond?   “No. No.” she responds.  “Just get me a really big closet!”

What woman doesn’t fantasize about a larger – better organized closet? I had a client call me in a panic once because her husband was threatening to throw out all her shoes!  A little drastic, but I’m sure there are a few husbands out there who can relate to the closet space conundrum. Read More…

January Procrastination – is it the Weather or What?

January hump day has come and gone…we are over way through the first month of 2012 – yikes!

If you did set yourself goals and resolutions, studies show that you may already be struggling to be true to them.  If you have still not determined what new directions or changes you might make in 2012, you could still be struggling.

Either way, procrastination could be part of your problem, and it’s not until you understand what type of a procrastinator you are that you can do something about it. In the following featured article, I’ll Do It Tomorrow – If I have Time by Barb Friedman, one of the co-authors of 16 Professional Organizers Tell All,  you’ll learn about some of the different types of procrastination.

I’LL DO IT TOMORROW – IF I HAVE TIME!

Does this sound like you or someone you know? How many times do we find ourselves putting off tasks until another (as yet undecided) time? Do you ever hope that some of your “to-do” list would just evaporate with no consequences? Well, the good news is you are not alone. It took me two weeks just to sit down and write this article!

We know that being organized is a learned skill. Read More…

Maroon 5 Joins Dorothy Breininger in Haiti Social Media Event

"DorothyTheOrganizer" Breininger Talks to Media about "Aid Still Required" in Haiti

All-Star Lineup Launches ‘HAITI: Aid Still Required’ Campaign

Normally everyone forgets about tragedies a few weeks or months after they happen.  Not so with this group.

Despite it being two full years since the 7.0 magnitude earthquake leveled the capital city of Port-au-Prince, more than 40 high profile personalities will use their Twitter and Facebook accounts this Thursday, the 12th, to rekindle interest in helping Haiti.

The lineup, which includes Maroon 5, Sting, Lady Antebellum, Hugh Jackman, Sheryl Crow, Tim McGraw, Martha Stewart, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, Don Cheadle, Deepak Chopra and NBA stars Paul Pierce, Blake Griffin, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul, has a combined total of 125 million social media followers.

“Before the earthquake, Haiti was already the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere,” explains Hunter Payne, producer of the campaign and President of Aid Still Required.  “The last thing it needed was a disaster.”

The earthquake exacerbated ever-worsening conditions on the island.  The number of orphaned and abandoned children has doubled since the quake, the incidence of rape has increased markedly, and Haiti’s floundering education system took a severe hit when schools toppled.

“On our trip there this past summer it was difficult to see much progress,” says Andrea Herz Payne, Chairman and co-founder of Aid Still Required.  “At the same time we saw how eager the Haitian people are to improve their situation.  There was no way we could come home and forget about them.”

Haiti was once a lush, thriving paradise.  A few hundred years ago it provided France with about a third of its domestic product.  But after gaining independence from France in 1804, the populace turned to subsistence farming, deforesting the countryside in the process. Today 98% of Haiti is barren, and the resultant flight to the cities has left urban areas impossibly overcrowded.

When the earthquake hit Port-Au-Prince, it destroyed hospitals, air, sea and land transport facilities, and communication systems, and left over a million survivors homeless and hundreds of thousands starving and without proper sanitation or clean drinking water. Today, the people of Haiti continue to live in a state of emergency.

“The usual pattern is for the public to contribute generously in the moment of a disaster and then forget about it,” says Hunter.  “But disasters don’t heal themselves – they take time, energy and resources over a protracted arc.  We hope this campaign will go a long way to engendering this kind of thinking not only about this tragedy but all others as well.”

Proceeds from the campaign are funding reforestation projects, infrastructure and teachers for orphanages, and trauma relief programs for PTSD and rape victims.

Setting Goals, One Bite At A Time

This featured article by Margaret Miller, Dorothy’s co-author of 16 Professional Organizers Tell All.

“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal.” Hannah More (British Philanthropist)

Everyone has goals although we don’t always refer to them as goals! There are two basic  types of goals. Short-term goals, quite often referred to as objectives, particularly in the business environment. Longer-term goals may include the completion of a major project or milestone in a company business plan.

The majority of our goals cannot be achieved overnight. Regardless of the goal type we  must face reality and understand that in order to achieve our goals we must make a conscious effort to work towards them.

Why is goal setting so important? Goal setting gives us a sense of purpose about what we want in our lives – for ourselves and for our company. Without dreams and aspirations, individuals live life by just ‘getting by’, rarely accomplishing anything significant.

Setting goals provides us with a road map for our business Read More…

What’s the Difference between a Dream and a Goal?

This featured article by Dixie Sanner, Dorothy’s co-author of 16 Professional Organizers Tell All.

A timeline and consequences.

I think of a goal as a dream with feet. A young couple recently told me they wanted to have a house within the next year. “Great!” I said. “What’s your plan? How are you going to do it?” The reply was all too common, “We don’t know, but we’ll find a way.”

Really???  It’s like getting in the car to drive to a foreign destination without a map! If we don’t know where we’re going, how will we know when we get there?

Setting goals is one thing – meeting them is another. Unless we take that first step of clarifying what we intend to accomplish in a given time frame, we only have a dream, not a goal.

  1. Put them in writing. I know you’ve heard this before, but it really works! Writing out goals helps to clarify exactly what you want to do and gives you a feeling of commitment to achieve them. This sense of commitment is increased if you share your goals with someone. Work backwards. First write down the results you want to achieve, then give your goals a realistic deadline. Your written goals should not only motivate you to get started but also provide direction for what you need to do and how to do it.
  2. Be very precise about what you want. Read More…

It’s your ATTITUDE, not your APTITUDE that determines your ALTIDUDE!

This featured article by Dixie Sanner, Dorothy’s co-author of 16 Professional Organizers Tell All.

Your attitude has a lot to do with your success at setting and reaching your goals. There are people who often feel like victims. You know them. You’ve heard their tale of woe: “Nothing good ever happens to me. I have the worst luck in the world. I can’t help what happens in my life.” Whine! Whine! Whine!

They claim they have no control or influence over what happens to them. They’re always reacting to what goes on around them. It will be difficult for these people to achieve their goals because deep down they don’t feel they can. They are their own worst enemies!

Whether you think you can or you can't - you're right!

On the other hand, those people who believe they can make a difference in their environment and that they can control at least some of the things that happen to them have a much better chance of setting realistic goals and reaching them.

A positive persistent attitude about your goals will help you keep going when a bump in the road sets you back. It will keep you from giving up. If your desire to accomplish your goal is not deep, and you really don’t believe in it, more than likely you’ll never see it happen.

One way to get excited and motivated is to make a Read More…
